L'équipe découvre que ce genre peut coloniser des zones où la lumière est quasi absente (zone euphotique) où les biologistes trouvent lors de la première étude jusqu'à 105 cellules vivantes de `*Prochlorococcus`* par ml d'`F33f`_`[eau de mer`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Eau_de_mer]`_`f.

Les auteurs notent que cette cyanobactérie présente une `F33f`_`[fluorescence`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Fluorescence]`_`f rouge et contient un pigment de type divinyl chlorophylle, ainsi que de la `F33f`_`[chlorophylle b`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Chlorophylle_b]`_`f, l'α-carotène et de la `F33f`_`[zéaxanthine`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Zéaxanthine]`_`f`:cite-ref-chisholm-88-6-1[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-chisholm-88-6]`_`f]. Cette combinaison inhabituelle et une ultra-structure procaryote distincte leur suggèrent que ce picoplancton est apparenté au `F33f`_`[Prochloron`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Prochloron]`_`f, tout en différant des prochlorophytes précédemment découverts (ancêtres possibles des `F33f`_`[chloroplastes`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Chloroplaste]`_`f des plantes supérieures), car ils contiennent de l'α-carotène plutôt que du β-carotène et un pigment `*divinyl chlorophylle-a`* (comme la chlorophylle dominante)`:cite-ref-chisholm-88-6-2[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-chisholm-88-6]`_`f].

Chisholm, co-découvreuse de ce genre, s'y est depuis consacré. Entre 40°N et 40°S, on la trouve sur l'ensemble de la `F33f`_`[zone euphotique`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Zone_euphotique]`_`f des `F33f`_`[océans`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Océan]`_`f (zone exposée à une lumière suffisante pour que la photosynthèse se produise pouvant aller jusqu'à 200 m dans les milieux les plus `F33f`_`[oligotrophes`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_fr_all_nopic_2025-10.zim|entry_path=Oligotrophe]`_`f).

Ce plancton disparaît aux latitudes plus élevées, sans doute à cause de conditions de température trop basse.
